What is Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a treatment method that uses high-frequency sound waves in order to treat certain conditions.

At The Osteopathic Consultancy, we use Ultrasound to help reduce local swelling and chronic inflammation that occurs with certain conditions. Ultrasound waves pass through the skin causing a vibration of the local soft tissue. This vibration causes a deep heat locally, but no sensation of heat will be felt by the patient.

We use Ultrasound to help treat certain conditions just as; muscle strains, tendonitis, joint inflammation, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, osteoarthritis and more.

What is TENS

TENS works by sending electrical impulses through the skin to stimulate nerves in the treatment area helping to block pain signals.

We use TENS as a treatment method for acute and chronic conditions where pain may be debilitating. We find that TENS is a great treatment method as it delivers pain relief directly at the problem area, as well as helping to relax muscles and helping your body to produce endorphins – natures pain killer. Although electrical impulses sound painful, the actual TENS treatment should not cause any pain, the stimulation may create a slight tingling sensation but in many cases, you may not feel anything at all.

We use TENS to help treat arthritis, knee, neck and back pain and sports injuries.

All treatments offered at The Osteopathic Consultancy are included as part of your osteopathic treatment plan. We will always talk to you about your treatment and we encourage you to ask if you do have any concerns.

What is Interferential Current Therapy (IFT)

IFT, similar to TENS works by transmitting electrical impulses which travel through your skin to the local tissue area however IFT offers a deeper stimulation compared to TENS. This deeper stimulation allows IFT to reduce pain as well as swelling and inflammation which can exacerbate pain.

We use IFT as a part of treatment when we find that movement can create further pain for the patients as it allows us to target and treat the area of pain without aggravating the condition. Often we find that IFT can help restore or improve restricted movement.

IFT allows us to promote and speed up the healing process with very acute and painful conditions, or where there is severe inflammation. Conditions such as disc herniation’s may benefit from IFT as well as helping to settle issues such as muscle spasm.
